The Daily Planet helps to oust a corrupt police commissioner, but the subsequent trio of honest men scheduled to replace him meet explosive ends. Perhaps it’s counterintuitive, but crusading reporter Clark Kent is invited to take the role of acting police commissioner until the killer can be found and a permanent replacement appointed.
A very welcome and refreshing comedic sequence of mistaken identities occupies no small part of the story, with Lois arranging with a crook of her acquaintance to take a dive in a confrontation with the acting commissioner, so that Clark can establish an (undue) reputation Of course, a genuine assassin is mistaken for the fall guy and Clark’s super powers manage to extricate him from a messy situation…
Primarily, this issue is a good reminder of how gory and grim some of these early stories could be - three honest men blown up right before the reader’s eyes…
